First Bangladeshi on ICANN board
The United States-based non-profit organization 'Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' or ICANN works on policymaking and coordination on various issues including domain names of websites, Internet protocols around the world. For the first time, Bangladeshi technology entrepreneur Sajid Rahman has been elected as a member of the Board of Directors of this top administrative and coordinating body of the Internet.
On August 11, ICANN announced the names of the new board members on its website. Sajid is one of the top three directors on ICANN's new board. Apart from this, the organization has announced the names of five people in four specialized departments. The new board members will begin their activities after the ICANN Annual General Meeting to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on September 17-22.
Sajid himself announced this achievement in a Facebook post on Friday, the day after the name was published on ICANN's website. He wrote, “Looking forward to joining the ICANN board. As part of the ICANN team, I want to contribute to a stable, secure and globally unified internet.”
Currently Sajid Rahman is working in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sajid, who started his career in the banking sector, switched fields and joined IT. The new journey of Telenor Health in Bangladesh started with his hands. He then started an investment firm called MyAsiaVC to support potential new ventures based on information technology. He is accompanied by Indian technology entrepreneur Pritesh Gupta and Hussain Elias, co-founder of Pathao in Bangladesh.
A total of 85 proposals have been submitted for ICANN's board in 2022, the organization said. Of these, 15 percent were from Africa; 27 percent from Asia, Australia and the Pacific; a quarter from Europe and 13 percent from North America.
A student of Adamjee Cantonment School and Notre Dame College, Sajid studied Marketing at Dhaka University. He then joined the Senior Leadership Program at London Business School.
